Generic Republican beats Obama
6/22/11

Attending the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, LA this week, I was struck by the tone of some of the attendees who think Barack Obama will more likely than not win re-election.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but unless the economy turns around quickly, even a ham sandwich will beat Barack Obama. Just this week, a Gallup survey has the generic Republican beating Barack Obama.

Certainly there is time for things to turn around, but the Republican message is simple: “We can do better.” It is, after all, the economy, stupid. Made worse, signs are pointing not to a resurgent recession, but a depression.

Inflation is happening. Prices are going up. Typically with inflation, wages go up as well. But that is not happening. So people are buying less and less as their dollar purchasing power is reduced. Eventually, this will force prices to readjust downward on the supply/demand curve causing a deflationary event.

That will be traumatic to the economy. And it will be Barack Obama’s fault. At a time when the President believes ATMs ate our jobs, the Republicans have a solid, solid shot at winning the White House back. —Erick Erickson
