“It’s a lot more fun to be out here as a state senator. I get to toss my own food and maybe have some fun with it, because I know a lot of the people now. I know where to go to get my favorites and it feels like I am coming home. That’s kind of nice.” said State Senator Bill Beagle (R-5). “I’ll probably have a rib steak.”

County and state elected and appointed officials gathered to help flip the steaks and pork chops that are offered for sale by the Darke County Beef and Pork Producers. Dudley Lipps, one of the founders of the concession organized the event with the help of John Keller.

“We’re an agricultural county, we need to promote that and have a little fun once in a while.” said Lipps, a crop insurance agent with Farm Credit Services. He went on to explain that the concession has been offered for the past 21 years. Located in front of the livestock arena, it has raised over $100,000 – all of it going to the agriculture kids in Darke County.

“We are open only on the first Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the fair. During that time, we serve about 5,000 sandwiches each year. It takes a lot of dedicated volunteers from Darke County Pork Producers, Darke County Beef Producers, Farmer’s State Bank, Merchant’s Bank, Farm Credit Services and 4-H parents. We need over 120 people to get everything done. It takes a lot of dedication.”

“This would be hard to do without Winner’s Meats. Mike Winner has been so good for us. He furnishes the trailer and a lot of the other things.”  continued Lipps.

The officials present clowned around a bit as they donned aprons. Then they got right down to work flipping steaks and chops.
