Not Friday the 13th

Rather it was Friday the 19th that kicked off the Great Darke County Fair. And what a kick off it was.

“Everybody’s a winner!”

“Step right up!”

“Would you like to sign up to win an Apple Ipad?”

There were many cheerful faces crowded into the fairgrounds late Friday evening. There was an assortment of activity that ranged from placing your bets on horse racing or taking the ‘Are you a good person?’ lie detector test.

Children proved to be having what seemed the most fun, running from game to game, pondering which ride they should go on next, nibbling on foods of all sorts, gleefully crawling into the bouncing castles. A petting zoo with animals ranging from baby pot belly pigs to furry bison also was a hot spot for the younger children.

“The water in the spa’s so warm!”

“How much does one or two tickets for rides cost?”

“Look at the deer... no, we aren’t feeding them anymore.”

Moving forward, teenagers were found roaming the fairgrounds with their friends. Many could be found loitering in the arcade hoping to win the ten dollar bill or pulling out the moves on Dance Dance Revolution. Even more teens could be found lounging in the rest areas provided by the vendors, or in the vendors doing business themselves.

“Let’s go on the Screamer!”

“I need more quarters!”

“Where are the funnel cakes with the yummy stuff on them...”

For any and all adults who were not absorbed in games or rides with children, there was plently to entertain. Live bands hosted at the Gazebo drew quite the crowd. The Star Spangled Banner announced the beginning of the horse races, where many scrambled to place a bet. A helicoptor flew nonstop over the fairgrounds, drawing the attention of many.

“See if you won this car... right here, right now.”

“Could I interest you in signing up to hear more about us?”

“Our products are all natural!”

The mood was hectic Friday night, and it was only the first day of fair. Eight more days are left in Darke County’s greatest adventure, and much more entertainment can be expected.
