Lamas-Funk Wins MV Elementary Spelling Bee 
December 2, 2011 

Mississinawa Valley Elementary recently held its annual spelling bee.  Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade competitors spelled their way through seven rounds.  Sixth grader Mary Lamas-Funk, daughter of Ann Funk of Union City, Ohio, was declared Champion Speller on the word “murmur.”  Mary advances to the county spelling bee on January 27 at Versailles Local School District.  Sixth grader Kali Bercaw, daughter of Korey and Brandy Bercaw of Union City, Ohio was named runner-up.  Fourth grader Cody Dirksen, son of Mike and Sherry Dirksen, Union City, Ohio received third place.  Two spell-offs were needed to determine second and third places. 

Other spellers included Abby Abel, Isabelle Barga, Jenna Bridges Daisy Brim, Casey Carrico, Courtney Cozart, Ceirek Daniels, Bailey Garber, Chase Green, Richard Greer, Jessie Harrison, DJ Howell, Mason Hummel, Lindsay Johns, Keearra Jones, Kya Lavy, Ayanna Miller, Casey Moore, Lucas Newbauer, Josiah Philiposian, Angel Schaffer, Alex Scholl, Blake Scholl, Paxton Scholl, Dylan Siert, and Emma Teeter.
