California Girl returns to Ohio

By Bob Robinson

Sara Hall (Berrey) brought her husband more than 3,000 miles to say “hi” to a couple of old friends – and mentors – Monday evening… and to sample the delights of a Maid Rite.

Sara was an intern at the Advocate during the spring term of 2009 and made significant contributions to our local news and feature offerings… as did all interns during my seven years as editor.

The big question was “why would a college student in California want to come to Greenville, Ohio, for her internship?”

If she ever really answered that question, I can’t remember. It’s irrelevant. She cut her teeth on reporting, added a level of excellence in photography to Daily Advocate pages and learned a few things about life in the Midwest. Some, if I recall correctly, were eye-openers.

It was a great visit, shared by her former editor and The Advocate’s current editor, Tina Chalmers. Sara and her husband, Chris, enjoyed their Maid Rites and after tying up a table for nearly an hour, we went outside for photos and…

To mark their visit with gum! See below.

Just before we parted, Tina to head back to work and the Berreys to head out to Indiana, Chris asked me a question.

“You used to live in California. Which do you like better… Maid Rites or In & Out Burgers?”

“Maid Rites, of course.”

He owned up to enjoying the Maid Rites but still preferred In & Out. His better half was shocked.

Chris may end up sleeping on the couch for a few days.

Sara is currently a staff writer and photographer for the Newport Beach Independent, while Chris works in the financial field. Check out the Newport Beach newspaper at www.newportbeachindy.com. Sara also has a successful photography business in her spare time. Check out her facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sara-Hall-Photography/186118768911

The Advocate has provided significant opportunities for high school and college students to taste the world of journalism through their service as interns. The following are just a few…

Jordan Pridemore, now a senior at Ball State University and trying to decide between careers in journalism and teaching. Olivia Fessler (Braaten), now living in New England and working part-time for a documentary company while raising two children. Janell Randall, now working for a community arts non-profit organization in Sidney. Aprill Brandon, now working for the Victoria Advocate in Texas. Kyle Shaner, the Daily Advocate’s current Sports Editor. And of course Tina Chalmers, Advocate Managing Editor.
