awards scholarships to three local students
CNO Business Sponsor funds four scholarships plus additional SSSF
scholarships
Three Darke County students were awarded Eagles 2177 scholarships for
academic excellence recently through the Senior Scribes Scholarship
Fund. Additional requirements for the scholarship are that the student
must be a child or grandchild of a Greenville Eagles member and write
an essay on what he or she intends to do upon graduation.
The scholarships were awarded to:
Zachory Allen Weaver, Greenville, grandson of Garry Weaver, Sr., will
be attending Ohio State University for a degree in Engineering.
Jeffery A. Mayo, Versailles, grandson of Richard Christman, will be
attending Marian University in Indiana for degrees in Choral Music
Education and Pastoral Music Ministry.
Harrison Davis Johnston, Greenville, grandson of Carolyn J. Warvel,
will be attending Indiana University for a degree in Psychology.
A fourth scholarship will be awarded to Stephanie Mayo on Aug. 21, as
she was in New York at the time the first three scholarships were
presented.
Presenting the scholarship checks was Eagles 2177 Worthy President Greg
Peck with student families, Eagles 2177 members and Senior Scribes
present.
This was the first year The Eagles has awarded four new scholarships.
“In the past we only awarded two new scholarships per year, plus two
second year scholarships,” Peck said. “However, when you have four
well-qualified, deserving students, picking two out of the four is not
an option.”
The Greenville Eagles FOE has helped six students achieve their college
goals this year.
The Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund, through its fundraising efforts,
has provided nearly $24,000 in scholarships to 20 students since 2009.
County News Online sponsors have contributed more than $13,000 to the
fund since the news service went online in January 2011. CNO is the
primary fundraising arm of SSSF.
