Decorating a Freak Vegetable
Booker takes first with “Egg Plant Farmer”
By Lyn Bliss

Glancing through the fair schedule does not make for terribly exciting reading – it is the events themselves that are exciting. However, when an event called “Decorating a Freak Vegetable” caught my eye on the Saturday schedule; it did seem a bit out of the ordinary.

According to Judge Nola Coning, this event has been going on for about ten years. An assortment of craft materials and art supplies are provided for the participants. The participants are to bring their own “freak vegetable”. This year there were three participants: Danny Booker, Bradley Booker and Vance Wetzel. Bradley brought an unusually formed egg plant and the other two brought strange looking potatoes.

The contestants are given 30 minutes to decorate their vegetable. This year, miniature straw hats, beads, Styrofoam, cotton, toothpicks, glue, markers, yarn, fake eyes, net, ribbon, and pipe cleaners were among some of the items selected to be used.

Concentration was high on the part of the contestants, and entertainment was high on the part of the audience! There were lots of speculations regarding just exactly what the final production would be.

When Judge Marty Schlechty asked for an explanation prior to announcing the winners, it was found that one of the potatoes had become a turtle and the other potato and egg plant had become farmers. The egg plant farmer even had two fluffy sheep.

Bradley Booker took first place with his egg plant farmer, Vance Wetzel took second with his turtle and Danny Booker took third with his potato farmer. What fun it was to watch these young men let their creative talents run wild!
