CNO Celebrates its First Anniversary

By Bob Robinson

Today marks the “official” one-year anniversary of County News Online. While articles had been posted as early as late December 2010, and test runs were made for a limited number of individuals beginning Jan. 10, 2011, the site was not announced to the general public until Jan. 15.

Well over a month was spent in preparation for this inauguration date… our webmaster Kurt Fritsch setting up the basic structure of the site and yours truly trying to figure out what the heck he was doing (and had gotten himself into).

I can’t begin to tell you the number of mistakes that I made and the number of times I was tempted to put my computer in a closet somewhere and pretend I had better things to do. Not only is CNO a demanding “mistress,” she is an unforgiving one. As many current CNO volunteers have noticed.

I got a lot of help from a lot of people, including moral support. Thank you to all of you. You know who you are.

When we posted our “Birthday Banner” last night, several people sent their congratulations and thanks for our service. It was a reward that made the last year of successes and frustrations worthwhile. One reader said CNO was the first thing he checked out each day with his morning coffee. Another told me CNO is the last thing he checks each night before going to bed.

Good comments. Good feelings. Making our goal of $5,000 in scholarships to be awarded to local teens in a few months didn’t hurt, either. For this success we thank our loyal readers and our generous sponsors.

When I decided to write about some of our highlights over the past year, I began going through our archives. It never dawned on me that I’d be sifting through literally thousands of stories. I ignored more stories than I wanted to and still ended up with nearly 150. I ended up trimming those even more. That still killed the idea of one article for the year.

So consider this the first of four trips down County News Online’s Memory Lane. Highlights for January through March included politics, the Kasich inauguration, Darke County’s drug enforcement kicking into gear, Boeher’s annual Farm Forum, economic development and the opening salvos of the SB5 (turned Issue 2) debate.
