State Senator Keith Faber at the Darke County Republican Men's Club in June, 2011

Fine Tuning, Adaptation and Growth

County News Online, 2nd Qtr Year 1

By Bob Robinson

While County News Online’s first quarter was characterized more by experimentation and “trying to get it right,” the second quarter was a period of fine tuning the process, adapting to what worked and what didn’t and watching the number of viewers and page views grow.

It was during this time that CNO went from a five-story Home Page to the seven-story format that you see today. It allowed for an increased number of sponsors... and more work for yours truly. However, it was justified by the support CNO was seeing from both readers and sponsors.

There were many highlights to this period of time. My favorite photo of all time - taken in 2010 for the Darke County Chamber of Commerce - was repeated for me by State Sen. Keith Faber. When I’m covering a speaker for any event, I sometimes get in that person’s “face” while he or she is speaking. They try to ignore me... sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Keith stopped mid-sentence in his presentation and “posed” for the camera in 2010. He was courteous enough to do so again at the June Darke County Republican Mens Club meeting in 2011. After that he successfully ignored me.

My favorite story was an exclusive interview with Don Wright - “Greenville was a Cow Town... and people had fun!” - he’s an opinionated old guy, as I am, who loves the Greenville of the 1950’s but isn’t particularly fond of what’s happening today. He has the story-telling and writing skills to make people sit up and take notice... whether they agree with him or not. I have often thought about scheduling a time to sit down with him for a follow-up interview, but they haven’t invented a day with 27 hours yet.

Other important news that took place during this period was the ongoing and heated debate over SB5, soon to become Issue 2 on our November ballot, the Conveyance Fee increase passed by the Darke County Commissioners (and the back-and-forth between Commissioner Mike Stegall and me over it), the introduction of “Bath Salts” to our community, Incumbent Mike Bowers winning the Republican Mayoral Primary, a visit to Greenville by Speaker of the House John Boehner and more... much, much more.

I hope you will enjoy Part 2 of County News Online’s trip down Memory Lane.
