OSU students visit Greenville Junior High students

(GREENVILLE) – Eleven Ohio State University college students recently visited Greenville Junior High School to talk with the students about college.

“The program was designed to encourage students to think about college and to inform them about steps they can take now if they want to go to college,” said Beth Sears, executive director of Bridges to College, a local organization that helps students and their parents go to college.

The OSU students gave three presentations throughout the day on Friday, Nov. 2. At the beginning of each session, the junior high students wrote down what they wanted their lives to look like when they’re 25 years old as well as list their talents and skills. The college students then discussed what steps the students should be taking.

“In just a few months, the eighth graders will begin scheduling their high school classes,” Sears said. “What students do their freshman year in high school impacts their college and career options.”

The presentations were part of Access 88, an Ohio State University service outreach program focused on access to higher education in Ohio’s 88 counties. The Access88 program is visiting five schools across Ohio this fall.

In addition to offering the daytime program to students, the OSU students talked with parents about college and preparing their students for college. Area residents hosted the OSU students overnight, and the following day the OSU students talked with school and elected officials about the community.

“The OSU students shared a lot of useful information. For instance, they stressed the importance of getting involved in campus life and how extra-curricular activities enrich the college experience,” Sears said. “The OSU students also took time to learn more about the Greenville community.”

“The Access88 work complements many of Bridges to College’s educational programs,” Sears added.

Formed in 2006, Bridges to College helps students go to college by offering one-on-one mentoring, educational programming, and need-based scholarships. It serves students in Greenville and Ansonia school districts. To learn more about Bridges to College, go to www.bridges2college.org.
