Big Brothers Big Sisters…
Darke County United Way Highlights Impact of Mentoring

September 10, 2012 marked the official campaign kickoff for the Darke County United Way.  During this time the local United Way likes to feature human interest stories emphasizing the impact that United Way dollars have on the community.  One local testimony featured Big Sister Diana Spitler and little Sister Kamy Mayer.  Kamy, granddaughter of Barbara Hittle and the daughter of Debbi Mayer of Greenville and big Sister, Diana, a City employee of Greenville and resident of Bradford were matched through the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in 2004 when Kamy was just eight years old.  Now, this highly successful match will celebrate nine years together in February of 2013.

Barbara originally wanted to enter Kamy into the Big Brothers Big Sisters program to offer a new dimension to her life.  Barbara wanted Kamy to have someone outside the home environment that she could spend time with, someone to offer guidance and support.  Barbara stated, “The matches that the Big Brothers Big Sisters program provided for Kamy and her brother Kerry were perfect, they certainly fulfilled my wishes for these children”.   The match of Kamy and Diana is a true testimony of the wonderful impact that a mentor can have on the life of a child.  Kamy, who is now a busy senior at Greenville high, volunteers locally at the Brethern home, is involved in band and tennis during the fall season and a wide array of activities throughout the year, still finds the time to do outings with her Big Sister Diana on a regular basis.

Executive Director stated, “Kamy and Diana have been a wonderful match to watch over the years.  Kamy, who came to the agency as an eight year old has grown into such a wonderful, outgoing teenager”.  Diana stated, “Kamy’s personality has always been friendly and caring.  My impact on her life would be that I was someone outside of her immediate family who cared about her and helped guide her with life decisions.  This match helped me by introducing me to this lively, outgoing girl who I can be silly with and laugh”.  The relationship of these two surely depicted one of success to the audience during their lively presentation at the United Way Kickoff.

There are still over 25 children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister in the program, so now is the time to think about how you could put a little sparkle into the life of a child!  If you are interested in becoming a mentor in our community-based program, please call 547-9622 or 492-7611 for more information.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a United Way member agency and an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.      If you would like more information about how to become a volunteer, you may visit the agency web site at www.bigbrobigsis-shelbydarke.org or call the Sidney office at (937)492-7611 or the Greenville office at (937)547-9622.
