Arcanum Newspapers at Library

The Greenville Public Library recently acquired a wonderful resource for the Genealogy Room.  Brothers Publishing Company, who publishes The Early Bird newspaper every week, has loaned the Library 74 roles of microfilm.  This microfilm contains newspapers from the Arcanum area dating back to 1899.

The earliest paper is the Arcanum Times which ran from May 11, 1899 through December, 1968 (missing 1961).  There are two years of the New Madison Herald, from January 2, 1930 to July 23, 1931.  These papers were followed by the Darke Times from February 16, 1961 to July 3, 1969 with a few years in the mid-60's missing. On June 2, 1969 the Early Shopper came out and lasted until August 9, 1971.

Finally the Early Bird began on November 1, 1971 and is to to this day a very popular free weekly newspaper for all of Darke County. Its microfilm goes through 2011. Genealogist Carolyn Fisher stated “Searching old newspapers is one of the major ways people find historical and family information -  so the microfilm is a great addition!”

Many thanks to Brothers Publishing for the loan.  Now Library patrons can add these newspapers to their research!
