Main Street interns thank community; photo show a success
By Bob Robinson

GREENVILLE – “Amber was a friend before I left to go to school,” Main Street intern Sean Wolfe said. “She is a mentor for me… I felt comfortable asking questions.”

Brealyn Eckstein and Amy Barger agreed with Sean’s comments about Amber Garrett, Executive Director of Main Street Greenville.

“She’s a great mentor,” Brealyn said. “It was always easy to go to her.”

Amy noted a reality: interns will “mess up.”

“She’s understanding,” Amy noted. “You know you messed up. She’s easy to approach… we work together so we can learn from the problem.”

Sean, Brealyn and Amy, all Greenville High School graduates, held a photography show July 10 as their final internship project, as well as a fundraiser for Main Street Greenville.

“We were brainstorming and came up with this project,” Sean said. “We always ran things by Amber but it was created by us. We put it together.”

Brealyn said she and Amy are the photographers, Sean is in PR (public relations).

Brealyn’s show photos were primarily the architecture and other interesting sights in downtown Greenville. Her focus is fine arts.

“I look for the fine art aspects, try to show detail. It’s interesting how many people have said ‘where’s that?’” she said. “They’re looking at a photo of a daily sight, and they’ve never really seen it.”

Amy is the photo journalist. She made the contacts with the businesses.

“I was at every business that supports Main Street Greenville,” she said. “I had more than 100 photos from the businesses I visited… we picked the best 10.”

She added she learned things she never knew, such as the bike tours offered by Countryside Bike Shop.

Sean handled the press releases and public relations for Main Street. She also got to know the business owners.

“It’s really cool,” she said.

“I’d really like to thank the community for welcoming us back and supporting our young spirit,” Sean said.

Garrett said the students have been working with Main Street Greenville three days a week over the summer.

“It’s inspiring, as a younger person in the community… it’s wonderful to see even younger people fall in love with Greenville,” she said.

She noted part of the internship process – part of her job – was to help enhance their education.

“As someone with an HR (human resources) background, we had to talk so they could learn,” she added. “They need to understand how what they do can impact them in the future.”

She added all three of them have said they could see themselves moving back here at some point.

“It’s really neat to see someone young and just starting their lives wanting to come back,” she said, adding they did a great job. “I’m proud of them!”

Garrett said she specifically wanted to thank the community for supporting them in their efforts. All four – Sean, Brealyn, Amy and Garrett – were pleased with the success of their photo show. They raised $900 for Main Street Greenville.

“We’ve had a lot of people in here, we’ve sold a lot of photos,” they said. This was their final project. “It was a success.”

Garrett’s summer interns echoed her sentiments with their own feelings about their hometown and the organization for which they interned.

“It’s easy to love the organization that inspires us to love them back,” Amy said.
