Miller, Springer named Little Mr. & Miss Firecracker 2013
By Bob Robinson

NEW MADISON – Andy Miller, 5, and Emylee Springer, 3, were named New Madison’ Independence Day Little Mr. & Miss Firecracker 2013.

Andy is the son of Scott and Shelley Miller and was dressed in a patriotic costume that was reminiscent of Yankee Doodle Dandy. He recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Emylee is the daughter of Sarah Ditty and Rodney Springer. She was dressed as Lady Liberty. She lifted her torch and said “I lift my lamp by the golden door.” Her costume was green… as was her skin.

“We used body paint and eye shadow,” said Samantha, a cousin who helped create the costume.

First Runner-up for Mr. Firecracker was Graysen Tabor, 4; second runner-up Nolan Blackford, 3. First Runner-up for Miss Firecracker was Gracie Hughes, 4; second runner-up Haidyn Rothwell, 5.

The three to five-year-olds competed out of a field of six boys and 12 girls. Contestants were judged on poise, personality and costume.

The other boys competing were Skyler Derksen, 4, Kaden Brookhart, 3, and Hunter Brush, 5. The girls were Elizabeth Poling, 5, Hayli Clevenger, 4, Kaley Brandon, 4, Addie Pipenger, 4, Paisley Weaver, 3, Aubrey Eley, 3, Kayla Washington, 3, Aurora Howard, 3, and Brooklyn Harman, 3.

The contest had originally been scheduled at the Civic Center, but was moved to the entrance of the school due to the likelihood it would be less windy. While decorating the stage, volunteers joked about the weather. Wind gusts hampered efforts, but the work got done.

Karmi Hollinger was in charge of the event. When asked how long she had been doing it, she said “too darn many,” then laughed and said seven or eight years.

The contest was limited to Preble and Darke County youngsters; there was no deadline for entry. Eight new contestants had been added to the lineup by the time the event began.

Eventually the breeze calmed down and the skies cleared. Family and friends watched their charges cross the stage, sing God Bless America or Proud to be an American or the ABC song… one contestant even did a somersault.

Some of them refused to say a word.

“Are we done?” asked Master of Ceremonies Lauren Armstrong.

The little girl nodded her head and left the stage.
