Addis crowned Little Miss Poultry Days
By Bob Robinson

VERSAILLES – Alivia Addis of Greenville, 5-year-old daughter of Larry and Amy Addis, was crowned Little Miss Poultry Days 2013. She took top honors out of a field of 29 candidates on June 14.

It was the largest group of young ladies, ages 4 to 6, in the event’s 29-year history.

According to Kimberly Hecht, contest coordinator, only 25 candidates were accepted in the past.

“Last year we had to turn several down, so we decided to open it up to 30 this year,” she said.

She acknowledged it will be a challenge for the judges… “I wouldn’t want to do this,” she said.

Named to Alivia’s court were first runner-up 6-year-old Molly Phelan of Versailles, daughter of Todd and Marti Phelan, and second runner-up 5-year-old Isabelle Kilburn of Versailles, daughter of Cory and Joanna Kilburn.

Contestants were graded on their attire (originality of design and appropriateness to Poultry theme) and their personality, poise and ability to speak.

Hecht said the Moms are “very involved” in making the costumes, and every year they get a good turnout. By the time the program started, the bleachers were packed with family, friends and interested spectators.

“I’ve heard this event has one of the biggest turnouts each year,” Hecht noted.

Master of Ceremonies Ken DeMange had his work cut out for him as a few of the contestants refused to speak, some had to be coaxed and one hid behind her escort when he began talking to her. Others were happy to talk about the silliest thing that they ever did, or that happened to them…

“I walk my chicken like a dog,” said Alivia. “His name is White Lightning.” When DeMange asked if he could go camping with her and her family sometime, she told him “no.”

Second runner-up Isabelle Kilburn told DeMange that she wanted to see if her iPod was waterproof, so she stuck it in the toilet.

“Did it work after that?”

“Yes.”

Little Miss Poultry Days and her court were chosen from the top 10 out of the 29 candidates. The others who made it into the top 10 are Hannah Cornett of Carmel, Ind., daughter of Kathryn Kelch; Gabriella Stebbins of Greenville, daughter of Jason and Mindy Stebbins; Ashlyn Porter of Versailles, daughter of Todd and Sara Porter; Maria Schmitmeyer of Greenville, daughter of Todd and Susan Schmitmeyer; Jenna Breeze of Versailles, daughter of Daniel and Carla Breeze; Caylee Wombold of Bradford, daughter of Nicholas and Jennifer Timmerman; and Elizabeth Nelson of Versailles, daughter of Ron and Theresa Nelson.

The remaining candidates were Star Ridenour of Versailles, Ava Shardo of Versailles, Josephine (Josie) Pothast of Versailles, Paige Gehret of Yorkshire, Erin Frederick of Bradford, Alayna Huelskamp of Versailles, Aubrey Wulber of Versailles, Kiersten Dickey of Bradford, Ruthie Smith of Versailles, Lucy Schmitmeyer of Versailles, Emma Mader of Fort Loramie, Elizabeth Randolph of Versailles, Lilly Perry of Rossburg, Greta Broering of Yorkshire, Destiny Bowlin of Versailles, Kenszie Glass of Greenville, Jaelyn Hecht of Versailles, Lucy Schneible of Houston and Shawna Schmitmeyer of Versailles.
