MVCTC Adult Education Holds Professional Development Day for Nursing Students

Clayton, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Adult Education nursing program held a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Professional Development Day on October 17, 2013, for all of the current nursing students. The day was an opportunity for students to hear from professionals in the healthcare field as well as speak to potential employers, colleges, and network with other healthcare professionals.

The morning started with all students meeting with Ethel Washington from the Alzheimer’s Association. Ethel shared her personal experiences with a family member with Alzheimer’s and discussed the importance of the care given to patients with dementia related health conditions.

Students then had an opportunity to visit the vendor area set-up in classrooms in the MVCTC Adult Education Building. Vendors at the event included: Alzheimer’s Association, Brethren Retirement Community, BrookHaven Nursing Home, Clark State Community College, Good Samaritan Hospital, Hondros College, Kettering College of Medical Arts, Montgomery County, Wayne Hospital, Wright State University, Senior Helpers, Hospice of Dayton, Miami Valley Pet Therapy, AMS Uniforms, Stillwater Center, Key Bank, and Life Connection.

Other speakers during the day included Bobbie Predmore (retired Chaplain of CMC) who spoke on the importance of caring in the nursing profession. Representatives from Life Connection shared information on organ donation. The day ended with a panel discussion with Kelli Tittle (Premier Health), Michelle Ezerski (Brookhaven), Sharon Charlesworth (Good Samaritan Hospital), Linda Kirk (Brethren Retirement Community), Margaret Mote (Wayne Hospital), and MVCTC alumni Debbi Greene and Rachel Fields. The panel fielded questions from the MVCTC LPN students about the profession and what to expect when they are looking for jobs.

MVCTC Adult Ed instructor, Kelly Peiffer, planned the event. She shared, “This event gives our students a chance to network with nursing professionals, area RN programs, and vendors in a conference-type atmosphere as they prepare to make the transition from student to practicing professional."
