Hordes of zombies, ghosts and more roam Greenville streets
By Bob Robinson

GREENVILLE – They came out in droves. South Greenville had hundreds of zombies, ghosts, princesses, Monster High dolls, Teletubbies, skeletons and more wandering its streets and sidewalks. It was slightly after 2 p.m. Oct. 27 and the hordes had just been released for a two-hour run from 2 to 4 p.m.

In less than an hour one resident ran out of candy and had to go inside.

I think it’s the really nice weather,” she said. “I’ve never seen this many kids at one time.”

Near East School the Greenville Fire Department had also been kept busy.

Well, they weren’t coming to us (at the fire station),” said Jeff Dohme, “so we decided to come to them.” He was leaning against the front of the fire truck while his partner, Craig Allread, grandson of the late Greenville Fire Fighter Bob Allread, held the “front line” handing out candy to kids with open bags in their hands.

Bob died just a year after he retired,” Dohme said. “Craig is carrying on the family tradition.”

The fire department was also on hand Thursday night handing out candy. What was left over was being handed out Sunday.

The firefighters donate the candy,” Dohme added. “We want to give back to the community we serve.”

Further north on Russ Road a family tradition was in full swing. The Barnette family was sitting in its swing facing Russ on their corner lot.

Last year we were bikers,” they said. This year David and Sue added another person on the bench handing out candy, their grandson, Greenville Team Football Captain Kyle Bruner.

David was the Browns Dawg, Sue was Elvis…

And I guess I’m chicken,” Bruner said, grinning.

A lot of candy was handed out Sunday… with the possibility of a few stomach aches Sunday night or Monday morning.

At the end of the two hours, some bags were full and dragging on the ground. One gentleman, just north of the high school, said he’d already handed out more than 300 pieces of candy… and there was still nearly a half hour to go.
