Woodland holds Literacy Night for parents and students
By Bob Robinson

GREENVILLE – “Woodland Elementary is a Title 1 building,” said Lisa Maher, assistant principal. “We receive funding under the program and one of the requirements is to have a literacy night.”

Title 1 funding provides financial assistance to schools with high percentages of low income students; the goal to ensure all children meet challenging state education requirements.

Literacy night was held Oct. 29. The purpose is to tell parents about the resources Woodland receives and how they are used, she said. Woodland had just had a literacy night and they were pleased with the number of parents who showed up to hear about the program.

The funding helps pay for salaries, reading recovery efforts, smart boards and other technological intervention to help kids,” she said. It also helps with books and other supplies.

At the end of the evening each parent gets a book to read to the kids at home,” Maher added. They get a bookmark with questions to ask as they read the story.

The teacher demonstrates a reading lesson for the parents,” she said. “Then the parents and students complete an activity tied to the book.”

Maher said the feedback from parents were primarily they enjoyed seeing how the reading lesson was conducted so they could better help the students at home.

They also really enjoyed the craft activity,” Maher added.
