Kroger celebrates Grand Re-opening
By Bob Robinson

GREENVILLE – “I’m feeling a little square today,” said the Kroger “box of food” guy as he greeted customers coming into the store. There was nothing to feel square about as the Kroger-Greenville Grand Re-opening kicked into full swing Sept. 19. The mood was festive.

Following a $4 million six month renovation, dignitaries from the Kroger district office in Cincinnati, local employees and local dignitaries were all smiles as they celebrated its completion.

Noting a comment about the new locations for many items, one employee offered a customer a map. He declined, responding that there’s always an employee available to take him to the item.

The Kroger celebration included its “square box of food” guy, a juggler on stilts, a chicken lady, samples available throughout the store, a $10 gift card (to the first 300 customers), a live radio broadcast from the WMMX Morning Show and performances by the Greenville High School Band of Pride.

Two ribbon cuttings took place. The first was for Kroger stores and included Kroger employees and dignitaries; the second was the Chamber of Commerce with dignitaries, employees and Chamber members. Greenville store manager Steve Weyrich presented GHS band director Scottie Moore with a $1,000 donation for Greenville High School.

Weyrich, Greenville Mayor Mike Bowers and Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sharon Deschambeau gave brief introductions, thank you’s and congratulations prior to the ribbon cuttings. Daryl Riffle, Great Darke County Fair manager was thanked for his participation.

“Greenville is such a tightly knit and family-oriented community,” said Weyrich. “It is with tremendous excitement we present our customers with an updated store filled with new products and many new conveniences.”

Afterwards the Band of Pride performed in various areas of the store for employees and customers. The “box of food” guy and juggler followed the band around the store and got into the swing of the music. “Box of food” had an opportunity to meet one of the GHS Wavettes, Jalena LeMaster.

Deschambeau noted Kroger’s membership in the Chamber started in 1987. Kroger moved to its current location in 2000.
