Caring for their country above themselves

ARCANUM – When you see a veteran stop and thank them, said two Arcanum High School freshmen, Wills Troutwine and Elle Siculan.

“You have no idea what they sacrificed,” Elle added; “What they’ve gone through.” Wills said “you hear everywhere about thanking a veteran… do it! They appreciate that a lot more than you think.”

The students had just experienced Arcanum-Butler’s annual Veterans Day program. They heard local veteran, U.S. Army PFC Harvey Hinshaw, talk about his experiences, and reflected on his service as well as that of all veterans. They thought about their future and possible service. Like many young people, neither wanted a life of military service but both would be willing if they were called. For those who have served…

“They’re going away from loved ones,” said Elle. “They care for their country above themselves… it takes bravery, courage… sacrifice.” Wills noted the years they have taken out of their lives. “They did it for us… we get to sit here and have a good time thanks to them.”

The decision to send men and women into harm’s way rests…
