“Summer Cruze-In Blood Drive” Grand Prize 2014 Chevy Cruze.

Top 10 finalists named in Summer ‘Cruze-in’ blood drive

DAYTON, Ohio – DAYTON, Ohio – Ten blood donors will gather at the downtown Dayton Community Blood Center (CBC) Thursday, Oct. 23 to find out who will be cruising in a brand new car.  All are computer-selected finalists in the “Summer Cruze-In Blood Drive” drawing to win the grand prize 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.

CBC partnered with REACH Magazine on the “Summer Cruze-In” campaign to encourage blood donations during the challenging summer months.  The grand prize Chevrolet Cruze is “champagne silver” as a toast to CBC’s “50 Years of Saving Lives” anniversary celebrated on Sept. 14.

CBC’s traditional summer blood drive campaign was extended to four months this year, with everyone who registered to donate blood with CBC from May 28 through Aug. 31 automatically entered in the drawing.  Also new this year, eligible donors were entered in the drawing a second time when they registered for a second donation during the blood drive period.

The 10 finalists represent seven counties in CBC’s 15-county service area:

Gregory Frueh lives in Dayton and works in Information Systems at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.  Greg, who has 60 lifetime blood donations, entered the Cruze-In drawing with his July 18 donation at the downtown Dayton CBC.

Elwood Dobyns is an apheresis donor who lives in Springfield and has 33 lifetime blood donations. Elwood, age 60, entered the drawing July 2 when he donated platelets and plasma at the Springfield CBC. He made apheresis donations again in August and September.

Robert Jordan is lives in Beavercreek and works in computer support at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Robert, age 57, is the top donor among the finalists with 168 lifetime blood donations. He entered the drawing June 30 with his donation at Peace Lutheran Church and donated again in August.

Paul McCloud lives in Liberty and is the only Indiana finalist.  He is 66 and has 10 lifetime donations.  He entered the contest with his June 5 whole blood donation at Liberty Church of Christ and donated again in July and September.

Gary Lavey lives Covington, is 51 and has 23 lifetime blood donations. He is a self-employed contractor and covers a lot of territory across Miami County. He entered the drawing when he donated whole blood June 9 at the Covington Eagles blood drive, his favorite place to donate. He donated there again Aug. 4.

Maria Kremer, is from Yorkshire in Darke County. She is the only female finalist and at age 21 she is also the youngest. She has 8 lifetime donations and entered the drawing when she registered to donate Aug. 14 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She works at KS Studio and Balanced Life Chiropractic as a licensed massage therapist. She is engaged to be married May 30 of next year. “My dad is a hemophiliac,” she said. “So when he was growing up it wasn't uncommon for him and his brother to need a blood transfusion.”

Gary Miller lives in Coldwater and works at Midmark Corporation in Versailles where he has become a regular donor at Midmark CBC blood drives. If Gary wins the Chevy Cruze he will be the second Midmark donor to claim a CBC summer blood drive grand prize. (Dan Lange won a Jeep Liberty in 2012). Gary entered the drawing with his June 26 donation and donated again in August.  He’s 49 and has made all five lifetime donations at Midmark. Midmark won the America’s Blood Centers Award of Excellence for “Most Productive Blood Drive Award” of 2013 when it hosted 16 blood drives, including the only late shift blood drives in CBC’s 15-county service area.

Roy Streetz is from Springboro and works at Excelitas Technologies Inc. in Miamisburg. He also spent 31 years in the automotive industry working for GM and Delphi, so he knows cars and likes the Chevy Cruze! Roy is 54, has been donating with CBC for 20 years and has 55 lifetime blood donations. He entered the drawing July 1 with his donation at Covenant Presbyterian Church and donated again in August at the Dayton CBC.

Billy Farley is from Fairborn and is the only finalist with the distinction of entering the drawing with his first lifetime blood donation!  Billy is 52 and donated at the Dayton CBC on June 13. It was important to him to donate because his mother is fighting cancer. He would like to donate more, but has been advised to wait until after an upcoming heart procedure.

Lyle Weaver lives in Tipp City and is a project manager for PDSI Robotic Welding Systems in West Carrollton.  He has 48 lifetime blood donations, including whole blood, platelet and plasma donations. Lyle is 50 and entered the drawing with his July 21 platelet donation at the Dayton CBC. He donated platelets again in September

The Chevy Cruze-In Final Drawing will begin at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Dayton CBC.  The finalists will choose an envelope, only one of which contains a golden ticket.  After a 10-second countdown they will open their envelopes simultaneously.  The finalist holding the golden ticket is the new owner of the Chevy Cruze.
