BBBS announces new after school program at Emerson Elementary

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is excited to announce a new after school program at Emerson elementary school in Sidney. “Starting a partnership with Emerson Elementary school is exciting. We are now in all 4 elementary school located in Sidney City school district” reports Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jennifer Bruns.

The High School mentoring program, which is in its sixteenth year of existence, would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the High school mentors that give so willingly of their time at this new site. These volunteers include, Tessa Beatty from Anna High School, Cole Cartwright, Sean Allen, Kayla Slife, & Alex Willman from Sidney High School, Rachel Marchal from Fort Loramie High School, Jenna Zimmerman, Jennifer Kaeck, Tessa Brown & Grace Burton from Lehman High School.

The program, which began back in September of 1999 started with a total of nine high school volunteers and since has grown to over 153 volunteer mentors from both Shelby & Darke County serving 126 children.  Through this program high school, sophomore, juniors and seniors from area schools are matched up with area youth meeting with them two times a month throughout the school year.  Activities focus on educational and social enhancing activities, with this year’s focus being STEM based activities.    All activities are planned and supervised by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members. 

The locations for the 2014-2015 Big Buddies program included sites at Shelby County include, Emerson, Longfellow, Northwood, & Whittier Elementary schools in Sidney.
 
Big Brother Big Sisters of Shelby and Darke County is an agency of the United Way and an affiliate organization of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
