Virginia Kettering Foundation provides major grant to Empowering Youth

GREENVILLE – The Virginia W. Kettering Foundation has provided a major grant to Empowering Darke County Youth to help support After School Programs in Greenville, Ansonia and Arcanum-Butler school districts.

“This grant will have a major impact on our ability to serve our students, especially as we move into the spring and then the fall of next year,” said Bob Robinson, Executive Director. “My Board and I are extremely appreciative of this support from the Virginia W. Kettering Foundation Board.”

Robinson added that major changes in the After School Program have been required by the current health environment. After school support began in middle or late October. Depending on the district and space available, students receive individual help from tutors in a designated space on campus, or they receive additional, focused instruction in a classroom format. Robinson noted that each District establishes its After School Program in the manner that best suits its academic support strategy. In the past 30 days, 42 students have received 256 hours of homework help and additional support in math and grammar basics.

The Virginia W. Kettering Foundation is one of three Kettering Family Philanthropies continuing the Philanthropic Legacy of Charles F. Kettering. The other two are The Kettering Fund and the Kettering Family Foundation. Funding may include support for education, environment, health and medical needs, human services, public and society benefit, and arts, culture, and humanities.

Since 2016, Empowering programs have provided more than 20,000 hours of academic support to nearly 800 Darke County students. In addition to the After School Programs, ongoing support is available through Empowering Distance. Due to the pandemic, support at the Greenville Public Library is available but limited, and Summer Tutoring at Edison State Community College is currently on hold. For additional information or how you can help, contact Empowering at empoweringdistance101@gmail.com or P.O. Box 1113, Greenville, Ohio 45331.

The Empowering Mission: Empowering Darke County Youth is a 501c3 United Way Partner Agency providing After School and Summer Tutoring programs to assist students in the areas of reading, language arts and math with the goal of Strong Students for a Strong Community.
