Monnin to speak at LWV Public Program

The League of Women Voters of Darke County is planning a public-education program on Monday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Science Lab at Edison Community College in Greenville.  According to Karen Brooks, League co-President, the League offers annual programs for the public that address issues that can impact the county, its communities and its citizens.

Brooks said, “This year we have invited Julie Monnin, Darke County Municipal Judge, to discuss eminent domain and other legal issues that could have far-reaching consequences for unsuspecting property owners if they do not know their rights and the risks involved.”  Brooks added, “In addition to her experience as a Realtor, an attorney and a judge, she has been known to put aside personal considerations in order to work for the common good of the public.”

According to Judge Monnin, eminent domain is the right of the State to take private property for public use.  Pointing out that eminent domain has taken some twists and turns over the last five years and continues to evolve, she said, “The topic is becoming increasingly important to all property owners in our current economic climate where subsurface property rights are coming under attack.”

Regarding another legal issue, Monnin said, “Everyone should pay close attention to southeastern Ohio, where property owners have entered into contractual agreements that allow hydraulic fracking and deep drilling for the extraction of natural gas on their land.”  She added, “Some of these agreements have been written to protect the companies and not the property owners, who are unaware of the liability issues they could face for years to come.”

The League welcomes anyone interested in Judge Monnin’s presentation to attend their program on March 28.  A question and answer period will follow.
