Friends of the Library
“The Greenville Poets” at Authors Night

The Greenville Public Library's Friends are again hosting three Author's Nights this winter!  The first of these events will be Friday, January 11th at Montage in downtown Greenville.  Doors open at 6:00 in plenty of time to order supper or snacks before the Authors begin their talks and readings at 7:00.  Bill Westfall and J.R. Price complete the evening with their festive music.

The Greenville Poets is a group formed in 1985 by Miriam Vermilya, Myrna Stone, and Belinda Rismiller.  Today their members are Myrna, Belinda, Lianne Spidel, Cathy Essinger, David Lee Garrison, and Suzanne Kelly-Garrison – all of whom will be reading on the 11th.  The Greenville Poets have published ten books of poems, three volumes of translation, one book of literary criticism, and two anthologies.

Cathy Essinger is the author of three books: A Desk in the Elephant House won the Walt McDonald First Book Award from Texas Tech University Press; My Dog Does Not Read Plato was runner up in the 2004 Main Street Rag book competition; What I Know About Innocence, which includes a video poem produced by her son David, was published in 2009.  Her work has appeared in anthologies and reviews and read on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac.  She received an Ohio Arts Council grant and was Ohio's Poet of the Year in 2005.

David Lee Garrison recently retired from teaching Spanish and Portuguese at Wright State.  His poems have appeared nationwide in various literary journals.  Browser Books published two of his four books: Sweeping the Cemetery and Playing Bach in the D.C. Metro.  Garrison Keillor read two of his poems on The Writer's Almanac and Poet Laureate Ted Kooser featured one on his website American Life in Poetry.

Suzanne Kelly-Garrison is a fiction writer who has in the past few years turned to poetry.  She was a winner in the Dayton Daily News annual contest for one of her short stories and she won a Montgomery County Arts Council grant for a selection from her novel The Stolen Child.
Suzanne teaches law in the College of Business at Wright State.

Belinda Rismiller has been writing for more than 20 years and has received two Professional Assistance Awards, one from the Ohio Arts Council and one from the Darke County Arts Council.  She writes realistic poetry about family and farm life.

Lianne Spidel taught high school English for 31 years and now teaches college writing though Edison Community College.  She's published poems in many journals and anthologies as well as three books: Chrome, What To tell Joseme, and Pairings.  Pairings was in collaboration with Anne Loveland, a Michigan artist.  One of her favorite poetry subjects is art as well as people, especially family members.

Myrna Stone's newest book, In the Present Tense: Portraits of My Father, is coming this May from Kelsay Books.  She has three other books: The Casanova Chronicles which was a 2011 finalist for the Ohioana Book Award in Poetry; How Else to Love the World; and The Art of Loss for which she received the 2001 Ohio Poet of the Year Award.  She has received two Ohio Arts Council Fellowships in Poetry, a Full Fellowship to Vermont Studio Center, and the 2002 Poetry Award from Weber–The Contemporary West.  Her poems have appeared in many journals, reviews, and anthologies.

The Greenville Poets have a fun surprise for Authors Night which will involve audience participation in choosing which poems are read.  Spend a delightful winter's evening with poetry, music, and food & drink this Friday!
