Watercolors and Wood Sculptures on display at Bear’s Mill

Wood sculptures by Richmond, Indiana resident Tom Bartel will be displayed alongside the watercolors of Peter Frederick at historic Bear's Mill during the month of September. The monthly “Art at the Mill” series features the work of an artist who creates three-dimensional pieces alongside complementary two dimensional fine art. The Bartel/Frederick exhibit opens on Friday, August 29 with a reception featuring hors d'oeuvres and drinks from 6 p.m. till 9 p.m.; the artists will speak briefly about their work, methods, and inspiration at 7 p.m. This exhibit continues through Sunday, September 21.

According to Julie Clark, retail manager and gallery coordinator for Bear's Mill, the nostalgic quality of Peter Frederick's paintings enhances and illuminates the abstract realism of Bartel's sculptures. “These artists bring an almost spiritual quality to their work that permeates the aura of our unique exhibit space; this exhibit will provide a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of busy lives, a mini-vacation that elates the spirit and inspires the soul,” Ms. Clark stated.

Tom Bartel retired from teaching art at Richmond High School in 2013, and enjoys now being able to spend the majority of his time in the studio. His highly finished sculptures, created from various woods, take on forms indicative of nature and humans. Bartel says that the central inspirations for his art work are his family and the magnificent trees that provide the material he sculpts into various shapes. “Trees represent the splendor and wonder of the world and remain a source of revelation,” explained the sculptor. However, he does not usually offer his own impressions of his work, preferring to allow viewers to form their own opinions and interpretations.

A self-taught painter, Peter Frederick finds inspiration in the changing light and shadow produced by the interaction of the sun and weather conditions throughout each day and each season. He is drawn to subjects with bold contrasting color values, especially those evoking fond memories of a bucolic past. The landscapes of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Kentucky provide the subjects for his realistic work which often moves viewers to linger while contemplating the seemingly familiar scenes.

Laurel Dabbs' finely hand-crafted duck decoys, songbirds and shorebirds, and photographs by Paula Willmot Kraus remain on display at Bear's Mill through Sunday, August 24. “Art At the Mill” receives financial support from Darke County Endowment for the Arts. Art exhibits are on view during regular Mill store hours, 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. daily. Historic Bear's Mill is owned and operated by Friends of Bear's Mill, a non-profit organization, and is located at 6450 Arcanum-Bear's Mill Road about 5 miles east of Greenville.
