The home of John and Stephanie Baumgardner, 303 E. Third Street, Greenville

Home Tour set for Sept. 21

Back again is the Tour of Homes sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Darke County.  Three magnificent homes, each unique in its own way, await visitors.  Whether appreciation for their beauty, an interest in gaining new decor ideas, or just looking for an enlightening afternoon, these homes provide all three.

Sunday, September 21, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., visitors may tour each home, learning its history and the challenges faced by its owners in creating the warm, livable yet innovative style that it is today. Tickets are $7.00 pre-purchased or $10.00 purchased day of the tour.  They are available at The Rose Post andTthe Old Arcana in Arcanum, Hallmark, Montage and The Flower Patch in Greenville, beginning September 8.

The home of John and Stephanie Baumgardner  303 E. Third Street in Greenville, built in the early 1900’s, combines the ambience of that early period with the modern appeal of their well planned kitchen. One of the features that catch the eye in the kitchen is the tin ceiling added in the remodeling from one of the Baumgardner’s downtown businesses.

The lovely woodwork as well as several furnishings date to the home’s beginning or are their family heirlooms. The original attic was transformed into a versatile game room, a spare bedroom and John’s office, a practical use for a space long unused over the years.  Bringing the home into the 21st Century is the outdoor recreation and entertainment area contained within a tasteful privacy fence.

The home of Brad and Cara Hayes is located in Arcanum at 201 E. George Street sitting  along a tree lined street  The landscaping invites one into this “American Four Square” house, built in 1904, a style that featured a more practical, simpler architecture than the ornateness of the Victorian era.  The modern touches that have been added to the house do not detract from the warm atmosphere of the home in which Brad’s grandparents, James and Glenna Hayes, lived for 45 years.

The Hayes used a lot of elbow grease to restore beautiful wooden floors and are especially proud of the lovely glass cabinet in the dining room and stained glass in several rooms that are original with the house.  Guests will appreciate the skill with which the Hayes have updated their kitchen and bathrooms.  For the décor conscientious, their second floor provides an atmosphere of warmth and comfort.

The rural home of Jason and Janelle Brinksneader at 4923 Hollansburg Arcanum Road, Arcanum, was   built by Marshall Valentine in the 1880s out of bricks made there on the large acreage that was eventually split into smaller parcels. The Brinksneaders purchased the home in 2003 and moved their family into the old house, which over the years they have transformed into a more family friendly home.

The house still retains original woodwork, upstairs floors and staircase.  Guests will marvel at the transoms above the doors, seldom seen today, and many other features of the original architecture.  The stately trees add to the exterior beauty of this lovely farm home.

Guests are encouraged to stop by The Old Arcana Restaurant for a brunch before they begin the Tour of Homes.  The Old Acana, combining great food with historic charm, is located at 108 W. George Street in Arcanum.  Although the cost of the meal is not included in the ticket price, a 15% discount is available on your meal the day of the tour..

Don’t miss this opportunity to view some truly unique homes.  For additional information, call 937.548.5378.
