DCP Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for all of your hard work during the Log House Dinners and Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland.  We couldn’t do it without you!  There is a list of upcoming opportunities below.  Please alert me ASAP if you feel you would like to join us or help out with something.

Volunteer Opportunities for January 2016

Volunteer Gathering / Learning Workshops:
Starting in 2016, we will offer exciting gatherings and trainings each month.  These are designed to allow you to grow your skills, go on wildflower walks, explore near-by parks and nature centers, help with group projects, and time to kick back and have a visit with fellow volunteers!  These are designed to be fun, informal sessions for volunteers only, so we can enjoy nature together.  We hope you see this as a small reward for all that you give to us.  Thank you.

Ps:  Have a subject you’d like to discuss?  Let me know and we’ll get it on the schedule!

• Historical Clothing Training - January 11 at 10am OR 23 at 2pm, If you volunteer in the Log House or Blacksmith shop, please join us to learn about period-correct clothing for our log house, blacksmith shop, Prairie Days, and other historical events. You’ll learn how to improve your impression, about proper undergarments, and some of the many perilous pitfalls to creating an accurate historical look.  We hope this program will give you a boost as we all study this difficult subject. *Note* please plan on attending only one date, as the same topic will be covered on both dates.

• Women’s Cap Making Workshop – Feb. 6 at 2pm, Ladies, if you volunteer in the Log House join us for an afternoon, and leave with your own period correct day cap. Participants will have their choice of three different cap styles. For each cap, please bring ½ yard of light 100% cotton or 100% linen fabric. If possible bring a sewing machine, related tools, iron or ironing board. Hopefully we will have enough people to make caps assembly line style, therefore sewing skills are recommended, but are by no means required. We always need people to cut and press. See Hannah with any questions.

• Maple Sugarin’ – Feb. 8 at 10am, Maple tapping and sugaring days are on the horizon.  Come learn the skills needed to tap maples, run the evaporator, and the processes in between.

Early Morning Discovery Hikes
Join a naturalist at 9AM on Tuesday mornings and hike the trails to see what we can find in the winter landscape.

Friends of the Park Meeting – Tuesday, January 5 - 6:30PM
Are you already a Friends’ member, or would you like to join?  Please plan on attending the monthly meeting at the Nature Center.  We’ll be discussing the Endowment Fund.

Un-Decorate the Nature Center – Monday, January 11 – 10am
Please consider helping staff remove and pack away the Christmas decorations for another year.

Trail and Park Maintenance Tasks:
• Final Cut on the Levee at Chestnut St. Marsh, Time and Date TBD – The ground needs to be frozen.  Let us know if you are interested, and we’ll get your name on the call list.
• Observation Deck/Float Re-building, We’ll be re-building the observation decks within the wetlands.  Let us know if you’d like to join the crew.

~Wishing You and Yours a Peaceful Holiday Season~
