Great Darke County Fair opens today
By Bob Robinson
Photos by Elaine Bailey & Bob Robinson

Preparations for the 155th Darke County Fair began months ago, but weren’t noticeable until a few days ago. For one photo sent earlier this week, Elaine Bailey told CNO: “I came from the fairgrounds this morning and couldn't believe my eyes,” she said. “The chairs were up and ready on a Tuesday... probably were ready yesterday, even before the vendors! “Such an interesting tradition... I can't help but wonder when... Read More. More Community.

Alas? Fair Time Again
By Naiesha Thobe

You'd be hard pressed to find a seventeen year old who's not excited for the Great Darke County Fair. Granted, I am not that teenager... the fair loses its luster after so many years, don't you think? I can remember when I was really young - my dad brought home a life-sized stuffed tiger through one of the many games. I don't particularly remember that year at fair, or the game, but I remember the tiger. Later on, there was a... Read More. More Teen Scribes.

A chapter in my life
By Elizabeth Horner

When you’re nine, you don’t stop to think about how the book you’re reading could change the entire course of a life. All I knew was that my best friend, Alison, didn’t believe my claim that I could read a whole page in “under sixty seconds” and when I told her, “I could too”; she pulled a thick, colorful tome off a shelf in our school media center, gleefully thrusting it into my hands. Okay then, challenge accepted! I didn’t even spare a... Read More. More Teen Scribes.

After America, the World Gets Expensive, Deadly, and Hilarious
by John Hayward

Mark Steyn’s new book,  After America: Get Ready for Armageddon, is both spiritually and chronologically a direct sequel to his landmark America Alone.  If you liked the earlier work, you’ll love this one.  It’s bigger, stronger, scarier, and funnier.  If America Alone was Steyn’s Star Wars, this is the rare sequel that improves on the original... MSNBC and FoxNews report that another day of wild swings in the stock market leaves it down 419 points. Be patient, turn off your TV and hang in for the long run I’ve been told…  Otherwise, if you just like wild rides I can think of a few you’ll be able to enjoy over the next nine days. Also in News: Possible repeal of new elections law puts congressional redistricting in time crunch; Double-dippers swamp Hamilton County; and Overhaul to make state schools more affordable may not work. Blogs: Scaling back SB 5 better than a bloody ballot fight; When the moment is right; and The mark of a tired nation. Obituaries: Thomas C. Coffield, Michelle J. (Pitzer) Smith.
