Darke County Drug Task Force...
Darke County Prescription Drug “Take It Back” Day

On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Darke County Drug Task Force, consisting of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenville Police Department, will be joining with the Family Health Center in order to provide the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft; simply by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  All agencies involved are urging citizens of all ages to bring their medications for disposal to the Family Health Center located at 5735 Meeker Road, Greenville, OH.  This service is free, anonymous and no questions will be asked.

Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds—121 tons—of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that linger in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Please join us as we continue to work toward making our communities an even safer, healthier and vibrant community!  Urge you family, friends and neighbors to check their cabinets and drawers for lingering medication and to dispose of them in a safe manner with us on April 30th.  Maybe you could even volunteer to do it for them if that’s what it takes!
