Felony Warrant turns
to stand-off with hostage
Darke County Sheriff’s Office...
On Sept. 7, 2011, at approximately midnight the Darke County Sheriff’s
Office received information that Leona Cheadle, age 24 was located at
130 East Water Street in the City of Greenville. Leona Cheadle was
wanted on three outstanding warrants including a felony warrant for
failing to appear on a probation violation out of Darke County Court of
Common Pleas and a warrant for failing to comply with a court order out
of Darke County Juvenile Court on a case of non support of dependents.
Before Darke County Deputies and Greenville Police Officers arrived to
investigate, another call was received reporting that Leona Cheadle
barricaded herself in an upstairs apartment belonging to her mother,
Christina Starns and her mother’s boyfriend, Steve Garland.
Present in the apartment at the time of the barricade was Aaron Turner
age 23, Leona’s boyfriend, Steve Garland, age 53. Leona Cheadle refused
to come out of the house and the investigation revealed that she held
Steve Garland against his will in the apartment until he was able to
escape approximately six hours after the stand-off started. The other
adults in the apartment were uncooperative with law enforcement and
assisted Cheadle in her resistance to arrest.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Negotiators
responded to the scene. Negotiations occurred off and on during the
night but the Cheadles were resistant and often belligerent with
officers.
At approximately 7:00 a.m. Special Response Team members forced entry
into the apartment and took Leona Cheadle, Angel Cheadle and Aaron
Turner into custody. The child was turned over to her father unharmed
at the scene. Greenville Township Rescue responded to the scene but she
was released with no transport required. There were no citizens,
officers or suspects injured in this incident. The stand-off lasted
approximately seven hours. Some neighboring apartments were evacuated
during the stand-off.
Leona Cheadle is being held in the Darke County Jail on the felony
warrant and additional charges as a result of this incident are
pending. Angel Cheadle and Aaron Turner were booked into the Darke
County Jail on felony Obstructing Justice charges pending the filing of
formal charges through the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office.
