Juvenile
arson suspect not competent to stand trial
February 1, 2012
GREENVILLE,
Ohio — Authorities said a 10-year-old boy who was charged with starting
a fire
that heavily damaged a downtown Greenville business last fall will not
stand trial.
The fire
happened on Oct. 30 at the Miami Valley Vending Service company on
Martin
Street.
The boy was
9 years old at the time and was eventually charged in juvenile court
with
arson. Officials said the boy was recently determined not competent to
stand
trial because of his age, he would not be able to understand the nature
of the
charge. Officials said they also felt that the child would not be able
to
assist in his own defense.
Fire
officials said “juvenile fire setters” are a problem and not just in
Greenville.
Darke
County Children’s Services continues to supervise the child’s progress
and any
counseling that might be necessary.
Damage to the business was estimated at
$350,000.
