State of the Union Address 2012

As predicted by most of the "Talking Heads" on both sides of the aisle, President Obama's "State of the Union" address was more about hitting the campaign trail than it was the actuality of the state of the union. He talked about what he wanted to do - such as making the wealthy pay their fair share - while he spent little time on what was actually accomplished.

Also as predicted on both sides of the aisle, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who made the Republican response to the President's address, talked more about the "State of the Union" after three years of the Obama presidency.

Below, County News Online offers the full text of the State of the Union and Gov. Mitch Daniels' Republican response from CBS News, including links to videos and other information; a released statement from U.S. Representative John Boehner; a statement from Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine; a report from Politico and commentary from Redstate's Erick Erickson.

Mitch Daniels’ GOP response: Full text

Below is the full prepared text of Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels Republican response to President Obama State of the Union address: “The status of ‘loyal opposition’ imposes on those out of power some serious responsibilities: to show respect for the Presidency and its occupant, to express agreement where it exists. Republicans tonight salute our President, for instance, for his aggressive pursuit of the murderers of 9/11, and for bravely backing long overdue changes in public education. I personally would add to that list admiration for the strong family commitment that he and the First Lady have displayed to a nation sorely... read more.

State of the Union & Republican Address to the Nation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement tonight in response to the president’s State of the Union address and the Republican Address to the Nation: “Job creation is the driving issue for working families, but President Obama largely ignored the fact that his own failed policies are making our economy worse.  Unable to run on his record, the president has regrettably turned to blame and division when what’s needed is a united effort to promote small business job creation. “As someone who’s run a small business, I heard little tonight in the way of new ideas or a plan... read more.

Ohio Republican Chairman Kevin DeWine
“Barack Obama has abdicated his responsibility to govern”

COLUMBUS -Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine released the following statement this evening on President Obama’s State of the Union Address: “Barack Obama once again squandered an opportunity to exude leadership and rise above the partisan divisiveness he has exacerbated during his failed presidency,” Chairman Kevin DeWine said. “What is clear is that Barack Obama has abdicated his responsibility to govern, and has instead resorted to commanding the public spotlight for the sole purpose of driving a wedge between Americans through partisan, campaign-style rhetoric. Three years of failed promises have led our... read more.

Obama State of the Union speech: ‘No bailouts, no handouts and no cop-outs’
By Jennifer Epstein

President Barack Obama called economic fairness “the defining issue of our time” in his State of the Union address Tuesday, casting himself as a defender of middle-class Americans and setting the agenda for his reelection campaign. “It’s time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts and no cop-outs. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody,” Obama told a joint session of Congress. “Let’s never forget: Millions of Americans who work hard and play... read more.

The State of the Union
Posted by Erick Erickson

There need not be 7000 words, the length of the President’s speech, to break it down for you. John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Barack Obama’s State of the Union is all about letting you know that government is going to do everything for you and when it can’t keep its promises, it will take from the successful and give to you. 1000 days without the Democrats passing a budget, the President never really even brought it up last night. Then there’s healthcare... read more.
