Montgomery County school wins $1,000 science competition
Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School advances to final round for $5,000

COLUMBUS– State Senators Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering) and Bill Beagle (R-Tipp City) today announced that Amanda Ooten, an AP Biology Teacher at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton, Ohio, is the winner of the “Make My LabWoRx” contest. Ooten's winning video and lesson plan demonstrate how nerves transmit signals through the body.

“It is critically important that American students can compete with their global peers in the STEM disciplines," said Senator Lehner, who also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Education. "I am proud of the work being done by science teachers across our region and wish Amanda Ooten and Chaminade Julienne success in the final round.”

Make My LabWoRx is the latest initiative from Science WoRx, a mentoring and online resource network for science teachers, sponsored by Astellas Pharma US, Inc. The 2013 Make My LabWoRx contest kicked off with seven qualifying rounds across the U.S. The winners of the qualifying rounds, including Chaminade Julienne, have advanced to the final round of the competition, which will be judged on Facebook. In the final round, the teacher whose entry earns the most votes will win his or her school a grand prize of a gift certificate worth an additional $5,000 in lab equipment.

“It is crucial that we support and encourage innovative teachers like Mrs. Ooten who make science come alive,” said Beagle. “Successful science students today make the engineers, chemists and technicians our economy needs for the jobs of tomorrow.”

“At Astellas, we all recall that moment when we knew that we wanted to dedicate our lives to scientific pursuits,” said Masao Yoshida, President and CEO of Astellas Pharma, Inc. “It brings us great pleasure to witness these remarkable teachers creating those moments for their students. We congratulate Mrs. Ooten and the winners of all of the Make My LabWoRx qualifying rounds, and wish them the best of luck in the final round of the competition.”
