State Senator Bill Beagle
Ohio to Return Accidental Tax Overpayments, Honor Greenville Youth

COLUMBUS–State Senator Bill Beagle (R–Tipp City) today announced that Governor John R. Kasich has signed Senate Bill 263, which will require the Ohio Department of Tax to notify Ohio businesses when they overpay their taxes and provide automatic refunds, and Senate Bill 300, naming September as “Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Month.”

The need for Senate Bill 263 was uncovered after Ohio Inspector General Randall Meyer issued an investigation report that found that the Ohio Department of Taxation failed to refund more than $30 million in state taxes overpaid by businesses and often ignored requests for refunds. The Kasich administration reversed this long-standing and unfair practice, but Senate Bill 263 will ensure future Governor’s will have to continue the new policy.

It has been one of my top priorities to bring jobs back to Ohio, and this is one more step to make sure that Ohio is a business friendly state,” Beagle said, “These tax overpayments belong in our economy, not in the state’s treasury.”

Also signed today, Senate Bill 300 will designate the month of September as “Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Month,” in honor of Corynna Strawser, a 16-year old girl from Greenville, Ohio. Strawser made it her mission to raise awareness and promote research so that others with the disease might have more information and treatment options.

Corynna Strawser was compassionate, selfless, and ambitious. Her advocacy was nothing short of incredible,” Beagle continued. “It is my hope that the month of September will keep her legacy alive as Ohioans learn more about mitochondrial disease and the research and potential treatments this awareness may promote.”

Strawser struggled with mitochondrial disease for years before losing her battle with it on December 11, 2013.

Senator Bill Beagle serves the people of Ohio’s 5th Senate District, which includes Miami and Preble Counties as well as portions of Montgomery and Darke Counties. He presides as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Workforce & Economic Development. Learn more at www.OhioSenate.gov/Beagle.
