Police Beat
Police respond to injured pedestrian, dog attack and more

On Feb. 20 police were dispatched to Shawnee and Wagner Avenues regarding a pedestrian hit while in the crosswalk. The pedestrian, William Price of Greenville, had a green light and was crossing the street when a vehicle driven by Erin Riffel allegedly struck him while in the process of making a left turn. The driver told police she did not see him. A witness said he heard a thump as the vehicle hit the man and noted the victim was bleeding from the head. Price was taken to the hospital. Nothing further.

DOG ATTACK

On Feb. 27 police were dispatched to the 700 block of Central Avenue reference a dog running loose. The officer located a white pitbull and another smaller dog and stopped. When the officer exited his vehicle he was immediately pursued by the pitbull. As he was turning back to get his taser from its holster a larger black pitbull came charging out of the property. The officer attempted to return to his vehicle as the white pitbull was biting at his ankle; he fired the taser at the black pitbull, also in pursuit. At that point both dogs returned to the residence. A juvenile was the only one home and she didn’t know how to contact the mother. The dog warden was called to the scene. A taser barb was observed on the black dog and removed. The report was faxed to the warden for possible additional action.

DOMESTIC

On Feb. 25 police were dispatched to Oxford Avenue regarding a domestic complaint. The victim stated her live-in boyfriend Kyle Brown punched her in the back of the head. She had just awakened him, he got upset and they argued. She asked him to leave, he got angry and struck her. Brown admitted striking the victim and said there was no excuse. He shouldn’t have done it. He was arrested and transported to the Darke County jail. Police also found he had an active warrant for failure to appear on a probation revocation hearing for contributing to a minor. No previous domestic violence convictions.

On March 5 police were dispatched to Colonial Trailer Park regarding a domestic dispute. It turned out to be an argument between the victim, a high school student, and the boyfriend, with whom she has a child. The officer discovered an active Indiana protection order against the boyfriend from the girlfriend. The victim and her mother advised they thought it was no longer in effect since she had turned 16 in September. The officer told them it had never been cancelled or expired. The officer also discovered the boyfriend was on parole. He advised the victim and her mother the boyfriend was not to have any contact with her; the mother then transported the victim to her home. A CPO violation will be determined once the protection order has been verified. The prosecutor’s office will be contacted regarding possible child endangering charges. The boyfriend also has an active warrant out of Fairfield PD and is a registered sex offender.

ASSAULT

On Feb. 26 police were dispatched to Greenville High School as one student had reportedly punched another in the face in the hallway. The fight was captured on video. The assailant was cited for assault and suspended from school.

On Feb. 25 police were dispatched to Greenville High School regarding an assault by a female student on another one. A staff member attempted to stop the fight and was injured in the process. She went to the hospital for treatment. The student victim suffered swelling, bruises and cuts to her forehead. She also had swelling and redness on the bridge of her nose. The assailant was cited for assault and suspended from school.

DECEASED

A deceased person was discovered in her home at 307 S. Chippewa. It was noted the victim had prolonged heart issues. The Darke County Coroner investigator signed off on the death.

ASSISTS & TRANSFERS

On Feb. 28 police went to Dayton Correctional Institute to pick up Holly Mowery regarding a warrant for failure to appear on a probation violation, original charge unauthorized use of property. She was transported to Darke County jail.

On Feb. 28 police went to Montgomery County jail to pick up April Cleere on an active warrant out of Greenville PD for failure to comply while serving five days in jail on the unauthorized use of property charge. She was transported to Darke County jail.

On Feb. 28 police assisted an ATF Special Agent regarding arrest warrants for David Milligan and Amber M. Stephenson Ross. Milligan was not at his residence; Ross was taken into custody and advised her husband was with Milligan working. Milligan was contacted and agreed to turn himself in to Miami County Sheriff’s Office in Covington. He did and both suspects were taken to the Federal Building for processing. They had been indicted for making false claims while purchasing firearms and providing firearms to a known felon.

SHOPLIFTING

On two different occasions police were dispatched to Wal-Mart, 1501 Wagner Ave., regarding shoplifting complaints. On Feb. 26 Stan Richards was observed taking a Keurig Coffee Maker and KCup package then leaving without paying for them. He was cited for theft. In a different incident, also on Feb. 26, Joshua Pottenger was observed taking multiple clothing items and leaving without paying for them. He was cited for theft.
