Nationwide scam noted in Mercer Cty

Mercer County Sheriff, Jeff Grey reports that his office has received numerous complaints from citizens within the county about a possible IRS scam.  Sheriff Grey states that his office has been in contact with the IRS and found that the calls that the citizens have been receiving are in fact a SCAM.  The IRS informed the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office that their agency WILL NOT call or e-mail a citizen without first sending a letter in the mail with a number for the citizen to call (if there is a problem with their taxes).  The IRS assured the Sheriff’s Office that they will never ask for money over the phone.

Sheriff Grey reminds citizens to never give out personal information or information about credit cards, bank accounts, financial accounts over the phone or agree to give money to the caller.

The IRS advised that this has become a nationwide issue and is not directly targeting Mercer County.  If you should receive one of these types of calls, you do one of the following.

1)       Contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or www.tigta.com
2)       Contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-282-0515 or www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov
3)       File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at http://frccomplaintassistant.gov, please add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments of your complaint
4)       Contact the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Detectives at 419-586-1450 (or the sheriff’s office in your county)
