Scheduled improvements (with estimated costs) to Darke County Roads and Bridges for 2015
By Jim Surber P.E., P.S., Darke County Engineer

An estimated $2,757,949 worth of improvements to Darke County roads and bridges is scheduled for 2015 that will be 90% percent locally funded. This is $329,943 less than in 2014. Local funds come only from gas tax and license fees returned monthly to the County by the State of Ohio for County Highway operations. No real estate taxes, sales taxes, or money from the County General Fund provide funds for any of this work.

With decreased revenues received from the State over the last eight years, and no local revenue, we continue to spend cash reserves intended for emergencies. The integrity of the roads and bridges must be our highest priority. This year we will use chip-seal on 17.59 miles to further stretch available funds for road surface preservation. The County Engineer and Highway Department responsibilities include 521 miles of County road and 531 bridges on County and Township roads, maintained by 30 employees. This is an average of over 17 miles of road and 17 bridges per employee.
