Power of the Pen
Versailles POP Writers heading for State
By Bob Robinson

Versailles 7th and 8th graders won or placed in multiple events at the Regional Power of the Pen Competition at Russia March 12. The combined teams took the top Sweepstakes honor, collecting the rotating trophy, which they will keep for a year and return to the competition in 2017.

Seventh grade writers repeated their District win by taking the first place team competition. Eighth grade fell just short of first with a second place win.

Seventh grader Lauren Menke rose to the top with a first place win in individual competition as well as a Best of Round win in Round 1. Her classmate, Maddie Durham, earned twelfth place in individual competition.

The two teams will be among about 20 percent of the 145 students from 24 schools at the Regional Competition eligible to compete in the State Finals at the College of Wooster, May 21 and 22. All students competing Saturday had qualified in their respective District Competitions in February.

According to POP Coach Carrie Borchers, students worked hard to prepare and were proud of their accomplishment. Eighth grader Jenna McClure said she looked at past prompts and created new story ideas for them. She also practiced a lot of free writing.

“I found new colorful vocabulary words in the books I was reading and then found their definitions to see where I could use them. I’ve accidentally made it a habit, actually. It helps a lot,” she said.

Eighth grader Taylor Hainline said she created characters and their personalities. “I tried to think of unique ideas I didn't think anyone else would use,” she added.

Eighth grader Emily McClure noted the accomplishments of the teams, saying “I am very proud that I am part of a team with such brilliant writers.”
