MARION - Scenes of solidarity were played out at high schools across Marion County on Wednesday morning.

Students met in the pre-dawn darkness and joined hands to pray with and for each other, their schools and the community as See You at the Pole was observed. See You at the Pole is an international student prayer movement that started in 1990.

At Pleasant Middle School, about 60 middle and high school students and adults gathered in front of the building to pray and sing. Officials with Harding High School said 15 students and adults met at the flagpole there. Students also gathered together at Elgin and River Valley, according to school officials.

Some of the local events were organized by students through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes clubs at the schools. The clubs are known as huddles.

According to the Central Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes website, there are seven huddles in Marion County, located at Elgin High School, Harding High School, Grant Middle School, Pleasant High School, Pleasant Middle School, River Valley High School and River Valley Middle School.

According to its website, syatp.com, See You at the Pole traces its roots to a group of students from Burleson, Texas, who attended a youth rally in early 1990. After hearing the message, the students felt compelled to pray and went to three different schools in the area and gathered around flagpoles to pray for their schools, classmates and communities.

The movement continued to grow among church youth leaders in the area and resulted in the first See You at the Pole event on Sept. 12, 1990, at high schools in four states. An estimated 45,000 students gathered at schools that day to pray. A year later, the movement had grown to include more than one million students in all 50 states. Officials said an estimated 3 million students in 20 countries now participate in the annual prayer rally.
