Tri-Village shows dominance in annual cheer competition
Patriots get inspiration from the great beyond
By George Starks

GREENVILLE- On the backs of their t-shirts, the message was simple: 'AB 10'.

It was just recently that 2019 graduate and star quarterback, Austin Bruner, was tragically killed in a horrific automobile accident. It was Patriots cheer advisor, Danielle Bourne, that spoke of Bruners presence.

"We dedicated this day to Austin," said Bourne as the tears rolled down her face. "He was our inspiration today. He was always there, sitting in the stands, rooting and cheering for us. The girls went out there and did it for him. When we got the news about him, I think the world stopped for a hot second for us. I think it really shook our whole community. What made it easier for us is that people from all the county schools reached out to us a gave us their support."

As with most fair events, it's all about the kids and the cheer competition leads the way, getting the Darke County Fair started.

"These kids work their tails off and I'm very proud of them," Bourne said. "This is a special group of kids. They are in the gym four days a week for at least six hours a day. It’s this kind of dedication that makes Patriot Nation what it is."

Even though Tri-Village didn't make a clean sweep, Bourne points out one thing to them on a regular basis.

"We teach our kids to win with class and lose with dignity," Bourne pointed out. "I feel like that's exactly what our girls did today."

Of the eight classes of show, the Patriots competed in five of them and failed to place in only one, Varsity Cheer. That category was won by three out of county schools as Covington won with Piqua second and Marion Local third.
