Rev. Dr. Leo Joseph Sheffel

Rev. Dr. Leo Joseph Sheffel age 99, of Versailles, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 5:54 P.M. at the Versailles Health Care Center in Versailles. Dr. Sheffel was born January 29, 1913 in Butler, Pennsylvania to the late Charles Anthony & Julia Ann (Vanconey) Sheffel.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII having served in the Pacific. Dr. Sheffel was the Pastor Emeritus of Pemberton Baptist Church in Pemberton, Ohio; and since 1948, pastored Baptist Churches in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, New York, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa.

He was married to Edna Valera Waymire of Elwood, Indiana on September 16, 1933 in Alexandria, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2004. Together they were the parents of four children, Kenneth Leo Sheffel, Carol Claudia Sheffel Oaks, and Frederick Ellsworth Sheffel, all deceased, and Janice Lee Sheffel Stahl of Versailles who survives.

Also preceding him in death were brothers, Raymond, Thomas, Andrew & Donald Sheffel; sisters, Geraldine Holtkamp, Loretta Oaks & Henrietta Taylor; and a granddaughter, Janene Oaks Delcamp.

Dr. Sheffel is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Terry, Joseph (Karla) & Mark Walters of Greenville, Penny (Billy) Chandler of Salem, Indiana, Greg (Becky) & Sherri Oaks of Waynesburg, Kentucky, and Becky (Jay) Hutcheson of Colorado; 17 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Versailles Baptist Church, 166 East Ward Street Versailles, Ohio with Pastor David Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Versailles. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Versailles Veteran’s Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to State of the Heart Hospice.
