Reintroducing Aprill
By Bob Robinson

When I stop and think about my journey here in Darke County, Ohio, I sometimes become overwhelmed at how fortunate I’ve been.

I sat in the editor’s chair of The Daily Advocate for seven years and led a talented editorial department to many team and personal awards from Associated Press and parent company Brown Publishing. Community support grew to the point where the oft-heard term of Daily Aggrevate my first year had all but disappeared seven years later.

When I ran for commissioner, strong community support and a great campaign committee led me to within a couple hundred votes of actually ending up in the seat. Not sure that would have been a good thing for anyone, especially me… but the support for this “furiner and snake in the grass” was humbling.

Once again, the community has embraced an offering of the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund… County News Online. Thanks to readers and sponsors, we continue to grow every month and CNO has been able to provide SSSF with over $13,000 in scholarship funding.

I am truly blessed.

However the real reward has been in the people I’ve met and grown to love.

The Senior Advocates of many years ago spawned the Senior Scribes. The Senior Scribes formed SSSF for the purposes of scholarships for Darke County youth. This is a great group of “oldsters” who love to write and share my vision for the young people of today.

Then there are those “young people.”

I’m not even going to attempt to list all the “kids” and “young adults” I’ve been privileged to work with and mentor. I could proof this column a half dozen times and still miss someone. Add the kids who have benefitted from SSSF scholarships and we’re talking about dozens of young people I’ve had the privilege of bringing into my life, even if only momentarily.

Which leads me to the purpose of this column. Reintroducing Aprill.

The young people I worked with were talented in a variety of areas, ranging from pagination and graphics to Internet technology. Most, however, were writers. Some opened themselves up with their opinions. Some searched for themselves and our society with their prose. Some were excellent reporters and talented feature writers. One of them had a talent for making us laugh.

Commentary and articles from our talented young people continues today with our Teen Scribes and other Youth pages.

One young lady a few years back, who raised the ire of our readers on occasion, was loved for her edgy humor. She made us laugh despite ourselves. Even those who grumped they didn’t like her, still secretly liked her (they sheepishly admitted) and read her columns religiously every week.

Consider yourself forewarned… Aprill Brandon is back. She will grace CNO every Wednesday for our enjoyment… mine of course, and that of our readers.

Coming soon… how she and “hubs” became civilized, a dissertation on the hated dishwasher and the big hairy ugly spider from hell!! And that’s just for starters.

Meet edgy Aprill Brandon – again - next Wednesday… and enjoy.
