The Day Fast Approaches
By Kate Burch

The deadline for a nuclear arms deal with Iran is March 24.  President Obama seems to have believed that he could gain support for his plan to make significant concessions to one of the world’s main sponsors of terrorism by a defeat for Benjamin Netanyahu.  He tried to prevent the Prime Minister’s speech to Congress, and then belittled his speech.  He reportedly sent campaign operatives to Israel to work in opposition and even arranged for bussing of Arabs to the polls to vote for Netanyahu’s opponent (sound familiar?)

Now that Netanyahu has won decisively, it is clear that Israelis and Arabs are united in opposition to our president’s stance.   It will be very interesting to see how the nuclear negotiations will play out.  Will Obama, in a fit of pique, double down on his support of Iran and punishment of Israel?

The Israel election also made clear that that nation’s people have wearied of repeated, failed land-for peace offers.  Obama has advocated for reinstating the pre-1967 borders despite Gaza having become a launching pad for missile attacks on innocent civilians and the terror group Hamas having joined the Palestinian Authority as one of its governing bodies.

So often, we are forced to wonder whether our president is (willfully) ignorant of the lessons of history and working to implement a utopian vision of teaching the world to sing in perfect harmony, or if he is deliberately bent on weakening us and our allies.
