Along Life’s Way
About Giving Thanks
By Lois E. Wilson

Imagine living in a situation where no one ever uses the phrase “thank you.” A person drops a glove. Another person sees the mishap, picks up the glove and hands it to the owner. The recipient looks at the glove, gives the one who did the kind deed a blank stare, says nothing, then walks away.

If you ignore the kindness or positive actions of someone, you are demonstrating rudeness and conceit.  You are making yourself the center of all things.

Lack of acknowledgment of the good deeds of others demeans them. One is treating them as if they do not exist. Such treatment does not speak well of anyone who acts as though the world owes them everything.

I expressed my view in this verse “Be Grateful:”

                                    Its syllables are two
And the phrase is “thank you.”
                                    One should never be shy
Just use it do or die.
                                    For the answer is such—
You can’t say it too much
                                    Those words, so understood,
                                    Make everyone feel good!

The act of Jesus giving thanks is noted in several Bible passages. In Matthew 11: 25-27, He gives thanks for God’s method of revelation. In John 11: 41-43 Jesus thanks God for hearing him. In Luke 22: 14-20, He gives thanks for the cup and the bread. Jesus gives thanks in Matthew 15: 35-37, “He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves and the fish, and when He had given thanks, He broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn the people. They all ate and were satisfied.” (TNIV)

This Thanksgiving, as we gather around the dinner table to break bread, remember the examples Christ passed on to us and give thanks for our blessings. Words have power. Giving thanks to others is an affirmation of them and their actions. Let us vow to always try to recognize the good deeds and worth of others and to show them our gratitude. It will be us passing each “thank you” forward—truly the way to turn our Thanksgiving into Thanksliving!
