Introducing Billy
Emily
By Delbert Blickenstaff

You’ve heard me talk a lot about Nelly, our yellow lab. That’s because I spend a lot of time with her. I think she likes be better than the rest of the family. I know she can’t talk but I think she understands some of the words I say to her. She likes to sit beside my chair at the dinner table. Maybe that’s because I let her lick my plate when I finish eating, if Dad isn’t watching.

I haven’t said much about Emily, my baby sister. I’m trying to be a big brother to her by teaching her things. Like new words. I taught her to say “puppy.” She knows that’s one of Nelly’s names. When I ask her “Where’s puppy?” she points to Nelly.

Maybe she’ll learn to say “Billy” and “Henry.” But I think it will be a long time before she says “Grandpa.” She doesn’t say much at the table because we all know what she wants. She doesn’t have to ask for anything. She makes a grunting noise and looks at something and we give it to her. Maybe we should make her name things.

We’re starting to write now in kindergarten. I know my name starts with a “B” and I can draw one. I think the next letter is an “I” but I don’t know what comes after that. Writing is fun and maybe next time I will be able to write my name.

I have been wondering what I’m going to do when I grow up. I know I don’t have to decide that now. But I want to do something where I can be around animals. I’ll think of something. Come on, Nelly, it’s bedtime.

Billy
