Mammas, Maypoles, Memorial Day
By Sally Amspaugh

Sally was born and lived her entire life in Darke County, however she said she loves to travel…

“I’ve been to many states and spent lots of summers in Canada. Favorite places are Rockport, Mass. and Lake Mississagagon, Ontario, Canada. My passion is my Christianity and family ─ a daughter, two sons, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. I am a strong Christian, attending Trinity Wesleyan Church in Greenville, and enjoy being a retired florist and farmer. Love music and am a quilter, writer, artist and avid reader ─ belong to the Enlightened Eleven Book Club. Life is good, I am blessed!!”

Some of our Senior Scribes requested we publish the following poem by Sally. She was a founding member of the Senior Advocates. Sally passed away on July 21, 2011.

Mammas, Maypoles, Memorial Day
by C. S. Skylark (aka Sally Amspaugh)

It is the most amazing morning.
The wind is jitterbugging through the tiny tips of
The new leaves emerging from grey tree limbs.
The promise of summer has arrived!
Mother left our family a beautiful memory quilt of life.
At times it was a crazy quilt, that partly represented the numerous fun times.
Take some time to ponder on your own growing up days,
Picture your own Mama, Mother, or Mom in a memory quilt.
Mom is in all the colors of love, caring and joy she wove so carefully for you.
Stitch more into your own quilt every day.
Pass on the shades of her antique wisdom to your little ones.
If Mamma is now a cherished memory, let those memories and the feel of her presence
Light your path each day.
I am dating myself with this memory.
Every May Day, May first, our teachers would pass around coloring pages
Of school children dancing round the May Pole,
Wrapping the pole with bright ropes of ribbon.
Those were the days!
As we honor the memory of our military friends who gave
The ultimate for our freedom, pray for these men and women
Around the world now serving a universal need for protection
From a terrorism we cannot begin to fathom.
Unable to wrap our mind around the evil they represent,
Simply give thanks for the safety and peace we take for granted,
That we can just lay our heads on a pillow and sleep.
