Introducing Billy
Chocolate
By Delbert Blickenstaff

Know what I really like?  Chocolate.  I like chocolate milk, chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, and chocolate candy.  If onions were covered with chocolate I would probably like them too.

I usually eat what ever Mom fixes for us and don’t even think about it.  One of our favorite meals is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy.  Mom usually makes a salad too and some kind of dessert.  Maybe even chocolate pudding.

One day at school we had a health class and our 2nd Grade teacher said that we should eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day to stay healthy.  She also said that drinking a lot of sugary drinks is bad for our teeth.  Oh well, I trust Mom to feed us the food that’s best for us, and I like everything except brussels sprouts.

Last week Dad took us to a dinner in a log house.  Emily stayed with Grandpa and Grandma.  There was a fire in the fireplace and it was cozy warm.  Around 10 other people came and some were dressed in early American clothes.  There were also Indians wearing feathers in their hair.  They told stories while the rest of us ate.  I think they were Shawnee.

The food was different from what we usually eat.  We had venison, buffalo meat, pork, turkey, and salmon.  There were several kinds of home make bread and coffee made from coffee beans that grew right there on the farm.  We even had chocolate cake.  We had too much to eat, and I don’t even know what some of the food was.

One Indian played his flutes and beat on his drum and sang.  Another told stories about bears and other animals.  One woman told about their family life.  She even said that some women became chiefs.  I didn’t know that.

When we got home we talked about how our clothes still smelled like the smoke from the fireplace.  I’m glad that we don’t live in a log house, but it was fun for one evening.
