Christ - mas?
By Mona Lease

Hi, all! I submitted a letter to the editor of the Early Bird - which got me to thinking - as usual. I did some more research past that letter. See how you think and feel.

People have been running around like Mad Hatters - readying for Christmas. One woman has denied herself and delivered  trees, food, clothes, dishes, bedding, tvs, - you name it. She sounds and looks very tired. Others swiped credit cards in the interest of a "good Christmas this year."

I've listened as people have had their vehicles break but - "we're going all out this year - for the kiddies." Side-stepping what this is teaching the kiddies - I'll move to the holiday at hand - Christ - mas. I spelled it that way for a reason.

Christ means anointed. It comes from an old Greek word - Christos. Therefore - Jesus Christ is really Jesus anointed. I read on Wikipedia that this Jesus person was born in a stable (I knew that.) and he slept in a manger - a feeding trough (I knew that.).

I read that his step-Dad taught him woodworking - or carpentry. I read that the belief is that this Jesus got no special favors - no getting out of work - that he and his step-brothers were treated the same.

I read that after he was born he received gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Frankincense and myrrh are two of the most powerful oils on the face of this Earth. You should know about gold and it's value.

So - I ask myself this: Would this Jesus person want us to drive ourselves into debt, into a headache, and whatever else? If he slept in a manger, had one set of good clothes (I read that, too!), and knew what hard work was - would he want us celebrating Christ - mas - his birthday - like that? Especially when he said he'd show us a more simple way to live - just love. (I read that, too.). I side-stepped a lot of the debating issues - like when Jesus was "really" born, etc. It all me going in circlers and I was not sure it was important in the scheme of life and our current state of affairs in Darke County.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
