Cleaver Knowledge
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! This column has been floating around in my head for  a while now. Follow me  - if you dare.

Was it in the '60's that we - as a people - told June Cleaver to drop the pearls - she could be more - "deserved" to be more than just Mrs. Ward Cleaver...that she could have her "dream" (some women did not know they had a dream and were told to get one!). June was told that little Beaver would be ok without so much supervision...that it would be good for him to learn independence. Wasn't it at that time that a woman hired a lawyer and struck out on her own in search of the famed "Career Woman Path" and all the "glitter and glitz" that came with it?

Wasn't it after that - a woman buying a home on her own - having a career on her own - that "someone" came up with the idea that she could have a child on her own, too? No adoption - her very own - no man - just a few thousand frozen sperm and a reputable Dr? But - it looks to me like we have gone in a circle. And here's why...

We have more college educated people and yet fewer jobs. We've told the elders years ago to not be a "prude" or "uptight" - sex is a natural act - nothing of which to be ashamed. Now sex is taught in some schools at the age of 10 - 10! And contraceptives are passed out like Halloween candy!! For all of the "free love" - we have more violence - more women having babies on their own - not necessarily by their choice.

I do not hear girls talking of going to college or carving out a career on their own  - or buying a home on their own, etc.

I believe June Cleaver would have sat Beaver down at the kitchen table with a pan of brownies (homemade, of course) and a glass of milk and told him that skin color makes no difference - right is still right and wrong is still wrong. I think June would have said you go into a store showing respect to the store owner and the other customers there...that you do not finger the merchandise or take it out of the package.

I think June would have told Beaver that the law is to be followed. If you do not agree with a court's decision - you do not go off, burn down a town, and destroy innocent citizens' property. What is supposed to set human beings apart from the animals is the humans' power to reason.

To me - it looks like the "Career Woman" path is old hat. It has been proven that that path is a long one with long hours at work and longer ones at home preparing for the next "rung" on the corporate ladder...which was the exact reason for many divorces in the beginning!

I think June would have told Beaver that if it is manmade and all "glittery"  - that "glitter" will surely fade and crumble. I think she would have said to him that no matter what happens good or bad - we all have to live on this planet. We may as well make it easy on ourselves and follow the rules. And she surely would have said - "If you spent as much time doing the right thing as you do trying to get out of doing it - your life would be great."

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
